Studio A: Elena from Daughter

North London native Elena Tonra founded the band Daughter in 2010 after the addition of Swiss guitarist Igor Haefeli and drummer Remi Aguilella from France.

Session Setup

Getting the right electric guitar tone can be deceptively tricky, especially when you’re working with stripped back arrangements as is often the case with Elena. As a rule of thumb, ribbon microphones will typically tame some harshness that condensers would amplify, while retaining great warmth and the low end needed for a full sound. Their ability to handle high SPL means we don’t have to worry about cranking our tube amps to the sweet spot and if you feel like the top end is lacking, just grab a nice outboard EQ like our API 560 and go to town. Of course, all this is for nothing unless you have a player with an amazing touch but with an artist like Elena, that is never a worry.
